Petty officer leadership academy

POLA WELCOME LETTER 2019
POLA SEABAG LIST 2019
Training information
Welcome Aboard, Petty Officer Leadership Academy (POLA)

This professional leadership training will expose each cadet to the rigors of being a Petty Officer.  Our adult instructors are leaders in their professions.  They are bringing together their wealth of leadership experience into this dynamic week of training.

Information on this website is not a substitute for the Welcome Letter.  Make sure you read both.

What to expect:
Each day will include physical training, classroom training on a variety of leadership topics, and many team building and problem solving practical exercises.  This training will NOT be death by PowerPoint and will require daily cadet participation from everyone.

THIS IS NOT A MEDICALLY FRIENDLY TRAINING.  DO NOT BRING MEDICATIONS OF ANY KIND.  If you are taking maintenance meds, such as for ADHD or daily inhalers we DO NOT recommend that you stop using such meds for the training.  We will not have medical personnel on staff and there is nowhere to secure presciption medications.  DO NOT register for this training if you are on any type of prescription medication or require any special accommodations.

NO MAIL CALL.  Say your good-byes before check-in.  You will not have contact with your family until graduation.  Due to the fast pace of this training we will not respond to personal emails nor give cadets any personal messages from home, so DO NOT send them.  Also, we will not be able to post pictures during the training; therefore, DO NOT send emails or Facebook messages asking for pictures of the training to be posted. Our focus will be on providing the best training and experience possible for the cadets that we have for only 6 and a half short days. Taking time to post pictures means that we are taking time away from the needs of the cadets and the training contingent.

How to prepare:
EXERCISE.  A PRT will be administered during training. If you cannot pass a PRT, you are NOT ready for greater leadership responsibilities.

MEMORIZE.  This is NOT Recruit Training.  We will not be teaching you information that you should have learned during RT.  As a Seaman or above you are expected to have the Sea Cadet Oath and 11 General Orders memorized.  You will be required to recite from memory the Oath and all 11 G.O.'s upon check-in during your seabag inspection.

COURSEWORK.  We only have six days to teach a wealth of information so we highly encourage ALL POLA cadets to complete the Naval Instructional Theory Correspondence Course found on Homeport.  Prior to arriving, take the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator at https://www.16personalities.com print out and bring results to discuss.

PACK.  Make sure you pack ALL of the items indicated on the list and DO NOT bring ANYTHING not on the list.  Your barracks are dorm rooms with bunk beds at a JROTC military boarding school.  All Cadets are required to bring two flat solid-white sheets (no fitted sheets allowed), one pillow, two solid-white pillow cases, solid dark-colored blanket (no patterns or designs). Make sure you bring a lock and provide either the combination or a spare key on the inside right cover of your service jacket.

BRING. A good attitude.  We will give you OUR BEST and we expect nothing less from you in return.  We have ZERO tolerance for foul language, bullying, malingering, disrespect, discrimination, or any behavior that is not conducive to learning or in any way brings discredit to the NSCC.

Check this page often, as more information will be posted regularly.

What Our Cadets Are Saying

Q: What do you think makes VIKING Division special?

The characteristics of the individual cadets are what makes our unit special.  Each and every cadet has the passion, motivation, and will to make themselves and our unit better. We all have a strong commitment to the unit, and most of us make the corps one of our top priorities. The pride we possess for the VIKING Division pours out from each of our cadets when we are at drill, training, or other special events. One unique aspect of our division is our pursuit of brotherhood among the cadet leaders. The leadership team makes it a point to bond with one another, which strengthens our combined ability to lead during and outside of drill. This promotes unity within the cadets, because it allows them get to know each other’s characteristics and how they operate, which ultimately promotes a stronger bond between us. "
-PO2 Mitchell Craig, Company Commander
